What is Outplacement?

Outplacement or Career Transition, are terms used to describe the efforts made by an employer to help its employees who are at risk of, or are being made redundant. It is a means of helping them re-orientate to the job market. A specialist outplacement consultancy firm is usually engaged by the employer to provide a range of outplacement services that will give practical and psychological support to these employees.

What services are offered?

An outplacement programme is either delivered through individual one-on-one sessions or in a group format. Topics will generally include career guidance, career evaluation, job search techniques, CV/Resume writing and interview preparation. Individuals may also be offered other services such as the use of an office, online tools and ongoing support until they have found alternative employment.

Objectives

The objective is to provide the individual with the services and support mechanisms to help them move to the next phase in their career, whether this is another job, their own business or even retirement. An Outplacement Consultancy will provide professional services not just to those individuals and groups who are being released from an organisation, but also to those employees still with the company.

Flexibility

Some Outplacement Consultancies have the flexibility to deploy their services either on or offsite, and will usually focus on confidence building and maintaining motivation. Support can range from one-on-one coaching sessions provided by experienced coaches, to a range of workshops that tackle the most common problems associated with redundancy – irrespective of whether the employees were in management jobs, administrative or other positions.

Special programmes designed to maintain the morale of those employees left behind, are also available and can include such topics as: Understanding and managing the new transitional changes, to strategies for managing and communicating the new corporate changes.
